We all want our dogs to listen to us, but what is the best way to do that? There are a lot of theories out there, but only some of them actually work. Today, we are going to focus on how to improve your dog’s behavior, so they do what you want them to. When you utilize our tips, you should be able to enjoy your dog without feeling like you are reprimanding them all day long.

5 Tips To Improve Your Dog’s Behavior

1. Use Positive Reinforcement

Yelling at your dog when they make a mess in the house is always going to be counterproductive. Instead, we recommend using positive reinforcement every time your dog goes to the bathroom outside or doesn’t make a mess inside the house. Give them a hug, pat their heads, and use treats occasionally.

2. Keep Them Physically Active

Dogs need to keep physically active and that means lots of outside time. This is especially important when your dog is a puppy. If a dog does not get enough exercise, it will become bored. And a bored dog can get into things they shouldn’t. Therefore, if you want your dog to act better, make sure they get the exercise they need throughout the day.

3. Provide Entertaining Toys

As we mentioned above, when dogs get bored, they get mischievous. If you want to get a few things done around your house and know your dog will get into things if you aren’t paying attention, provide them with an entertaining toy. A dog can spend a long time trying to figure a new toy out or even trying to remember an older one. So, rotate those toys to keep your dog’s mind thinking and active.

4. Be Consistent

There are going to be days when you are not going to want to train your dog because you are tired. This is the wrong attitude to take because your dog needs consistency. You cannot tell them to sit one day and then let them jump all over the next. Everyone in your family also needs to follow the same training guidelines or your dog will be totally confused about what is expected of them.

5. Reward Positive Attitudes

It is easy to give your dog a treat when they sit when you tell them to. However, when was the last time you gave your dog a treat for doing something good that you did not ask them to do? Your dog is going to act much better if you simply reward them for their positive attitude throughout the day. If your dog is calm and you give them a treat, they will think, “Hey, I will get treats if I act this way.”. Of course, you can’t give your dog treats all the time. But after a while, your dog will simply act nicely without even expecting a treat.

These are five tips you can use to improve your dog’s behavior. It will take some time to get your dog to behave the way you want them to. But a little consistency on your part, and a little hard work, will be all you need to have a wonderfully behaved dog in the future.
